Between the 4th and the 6th of November we took part in a workshop organized by Fotomata and conducted by a Guatemalan photographer Luis Gonzalez Palma, nevertheless we did not mention it here, as it seemed it would have been impossible to transmit, even get close to, the extraordinary sensations we went through these days spent together. Last Saturday, by coincidence, we came across this photograph by Luís on the cover of a cultural supplement Babelia and we cannot avoid a small review of his work anymore.

A few days ago we had a chance to see an Article by Zabalbeascoa Anatxu published in the newspaper El País, dated 23rd of October, 2011, and with a note od satisfaction we observe that the concise analysis of Culinary school in a former slaughterhouse in Medina Sidonia confirms all the impresions we had about the project, while realizing the photographic report and through the contact we had with its authors, the architects Juanjo González and María de la Cruz.

The journalist and historian Anatxu Zabalbeascoa writes regularly on architecture in different media (newspaper, blog and weekly extra) related to the newspaper El País, contributing to better understanding and dissemination of the last works in this field as well as in the design. In “The Country Weekly”, October 9th, she wrote an interesting article entitled “Performance at the periphery” which reviews a number of exemplary interventions from the point of view of their “singularity” – a concept that is undergoing reformulation, seeking a new life with other values, solid and permanent, as transformation, research, price, maintenance, location, visibility, sustainability, etc.

This architectural intervention by the architects Ana Ruiz de Apodaca and Carmen Pérez Díaz is the winning entry for a competition held by the Town of Entrambasaguas, a small town in the Spanish region Cantabria near Santander. The competion task was to design a House of Culture on a site located near the doctor’s office and the church, and its proposal was to create “a symbiosis between the open and the constructed space”.
The building is slightly rotated around the axis of the street and the doctor´s office, “creating three open spaces. The first one is a green carpet that welcomes visitors and gives the perspective of the building access. The second space is a car park located in a less visible area bounded by the medical center and the House of Culture itself, that allows for a shared use of the car park. The last one is a garden as an extension of the House of Culture, that hosts a a health park for the ealdery people and tree areas”.

Italian magazine Casabella, in its 805 edition, publishes a wide selection of images from our report on the Interactive Museum of the History of Lugo, interventions by the architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, that we mentioned in the previous entry. The critical and descriptive text is accompanied by a set of drawings (plants, sections and construction details) that facilitate the understanding of this complex underground intervention and establish a perfect dialogue with the photographs of the work, taken at various times, the aerial shots that describe its urban presence and detail images show construction materials and finishes.

Arquitectura Viva publishes in its annual double edition No. 147-148 a selection of the best of Spanish architecture of the year. Among the works selected one can find our report on the Kindergarten Albolote (Grenada) by the architect Alejandro Muñoz Miranda. This work is characterized by strong geometry defined by bleached planes, that reflect light outwards, and the glazed openings that dye the light on its way to fill the interior space with color “and so the children pass on their daily walks joyfull spaces and playful dreamlike atmosphere, that experience constant change.

A culinary school in a former slaughterhouse in Medina Sidonia © Fernando Alda
Recently we published on our website's architecture photography last finished work architects Maria Gonzalez y Juanjo Lopez de la Cruz. We do not believe that this project should go unnoticed. This is an interesting intervention that responds to the request to install a hospitality school in the old building of the abattoir, Cadiz in the town of Medina Sidonia. The project developed from an initial position of engagement with the place and the existing building (analysis, development and respect for the town and its old slaughterhouse), further the search for architectural, more personal, a certain formal abstraction. It reaches its expansion in areas not built and annexes, being especially notable and free decks. As we show some images of all, this solution is not at all the result of a rhetorical exercise. The aim is rather fit and “shelter” the building in its urban reality. The right look, established some distance, forms reveals that, color and materials are anything but capricious and, perhaps- were present between the lines in a text that this project has been able to read in poetic form.

A team of three architectural offices from Seville (Runners-up, Lugader and Beanie) has published this guide to contemporary architecture of the city, as an inniciative to spread internationally news on our local architecture. Following the presentation, an exhibition which “offers a tour of the most outstanding examples of architecture in the city of the year 2000 to 2010″ will take place at University of Seville (July 15th till September 15th).
“After a long period of assimilation of the architectural and infrastructure demonstrations held to mark the EXPO’92, and for which Seville´s urban morphology and its function as a metropolis were substantially transformed, the first decade of XXI century starts as a period of transcendent projects and urban changes, related to movility and public spaces”.

Magazine Arquitectura Viva Select a picture has become our home for. Story belongs to the San Telmo Museum, San Sebastian, built by the architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, has recently been opened. It is very gratifying for us now see the results of a study that has lasted long, and we have followed the work in its construction and have extensively documented the process. There have been many photographs-may- not be seen, contained in them but that would not exist otherwise. The virtuality of the works in progress generates unique time and space, on that one day we must reflect.

An Italian magazine/newspaper Uruk, from Palermo, with which we had established contact and cooperation, has published several articles of interest. We are particularly pleased with the presence of some works, projects and images that have been really important for us for many reasons. Whether because of the long collaboration with architects, the special relationship with some works or the load of personal content in some images, it has been very gratifying to receive URUK in our studio, enjoy the reading and the Italian taste that is so close to us.
Among the articles published in this issue we highlight VS-UNIFORM UNIVERSAL JOINT, by Mark Scarpinato; GRANADA. Qal `at al-Hanro dedicated to Alvaro Siza and Juan Domingo Santos for the new access to Alhambra in Granada; CORDOBA. MADINAT AL ZAHARA dedicated to the museum built by the architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, recently recognized with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
This relationship has been established in a very special and satisfying way. I all started with the personal project “From the Monument to the City, From the City to the Ocean” that never stops surprising us.
