Last October 22th, The Ateneo of Malaga and the University of Malaga, through its Vice-rector office of extramural university studios, published the winners of its 2015 Prizes, that award the authors of Malaga’s most noted works in six art disciplines. Journalism, poetry, engraving, photography, scientific dissemination and, for the first time, architecture have been the cathegories of this edition.

Prize of best architecture work between 2005 and 2015 has been awarded to Botánical Garden in Nerja (Málaga) of ISMO Arquitectura, and architecture studio founded by Isabel Amores Sánchez y Modesto García Méndez in 2001. As they say: “Located in the Nature Park Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, near Cave of Nerja, and opened to the bright sea, the architectural intervention joins mountainside to traffic of walkers, where infrastructures dissperses like urban furniture. The footsteps go on earthen roads, that sometimes are join to the land or sometimes are high to save a river bed or to be simply accesible. (…) Buildings emerge over landscape, getting wrinkled themselves to half-close the view, in the shape of covered viewpoints”.

“New values look for their roots” in the newspaper El País.

A few days ago we had a chance to see an Article by Zabalbeascoa Anatxu published in the newspaper El País, dated 23rd of October, 2011, and with a note od satisfaction we observe that the concise analysis of Culinary school in a former slaughterhouse in Medina Sidonia confirms all the impresions we had about the project, while realizing the photographic report and through the contact we had with its authors, the architects Juanjo González and María de la Cruz.

The article by Anatxu Zabalbeascoa in The Country Weekly

The journalist and historian Anatxu Zabalbeascoa writes regularly on architecture in different media (newspaper, blog and weekly extra) related to the newspaper El País, contributing to better understanding and dissemination of the last works in this field as well as in the design. In “The Country Weekly”, October 9th, she wrote an interesting article entitled “Performance at the periphery” which reviews a number of exemplary interventions from the point of view of their “singularity” – a concept that is undergoing reformulation, seeking a new life with other values, solid and permanent, as transformation, research, price, maintenance, location, visibility, sustainability, etc.

House of Culture in Entrambasaguas (Santander)

This architectural intervention by the architects Ana Ruiz de Apodaca and Carmen Pérez Díaz is the winning entry for a competition held by the Town of Entrambasaguas, a small town in the Spanish region Cantabria near Santander. The competion task was to design a House of Culture on a site located near the doctor’s office and the church, and its proposal was to create “a symbiosis between the open and the constructed space”.

The building is slightly rotated around the axis of the street and the doctor´s office, “creating three open spaces. The first one is a green carpet that welcomes visitors and gives the perspective of the building access. The second space is a car park located in a less visible area bounded by the medical center and the House of Culture itself, that allows for a shared use of the car park. The last one is a garden as an extension of the House of Culture, that hosts a a health park for the ealdery people and tree areas”.

Public liberary in Ceuta. Work in progress

Biblioteca en Ceuta durante la construcción, arquitectos Paredes Pedrosa

Public Library in Ceuta: Construction site © Fernando Alda

Construction site photography is of great importance to our studio and we constantly try to overcome, by applying strong economic incentives, the reasons for not turning it into a widespread practice. The knowledge that it gives us both about the project, its space and basic ideas, puts us in an optimal position for the completion of final report. That record allows us to completely cover our concept of documentary architectural photography, providing valuable information for the various participants of the architectural process (administrations, invertors, architects, construction companies, specialists …), something that cannot always be done from the finish.

We are currently conducting follow-up documentation and photographic work in the new public library in Ceuta. The project by Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos won the architectural competition in 2007 and has been published by some media.

Recently we published on our website's architecture photography last finished work architects Maria Gonzalez y Juanjo Lopez de la Cruz. We do not believe that this project should go unnoticed. This is an interesting intervention that responds to the request to install a hospitality school in the old building of the abattoir, Cadiz in the town of Medina Sidonia. The project developed from an initial position of engagement with the place and the existing building (analysis, development and respect for the town and its old slaughterhouse), further the search for architectural, more personal, a certain formal abstraction. It reaches its expansion in areas not built and annexes, being especially notable and free decks. As we show some images of all, this solution is not at all the result of a rhetorical exercise. The aim is rather fit and “shelter” the building in its urban reality. The right look, established some distance, forms reveals that, color and materials are anything but capricious and, perhaps- were present between the lines in a text that this project has been able to read in poetic form.
