We have incorporated on our website the report of the new Interactive Museum of the History of Lugo, designed by architects Nieto and Enrique Sobejano Fuensanta. Several magazines have already expressed interest in publishing it and AV announced it on its website. Meanwhile, we anticipate these pictures and the text, kindly delivered by its authors.

The landlot subject of the tender for the Interactive Museum of the History of Lugo, that until recently featured old industrial structures, is relatively distant from the historic center, but soon will become a target point for turists comming to visit the city. This is mainly due to the decision of locating a large parking area with scale urban infrastructure.

Architecture and landscape merge in our proposal for a museum-park, or a park-museum, and are linked with the sequence of the city’s green spaces hiding the underground parking areas and emerging constellation of lanterns in cylinders scattered on a green meadow. As it always happens when intended to formalize an architectural idea, -not infrequently arosen from intuition,- it is the program analysis and the place that give the meaning to a specific proposal. The building is divided into two large interconnected areas: interchange node-parking and museum. The considerable level difference between east and west ends of the solar, suggest the possibility of making a reference point in the park so that the garage is developed almost to street level and thus partially buried and out of sight.

The Museum and Visitor Center is organized mainly on a single floor lit through large circular patios that introduce natural light inside and allow for its independent use and controll. From the main courtyard the most unique tall showrooms emerge – like contemporary cylindrical bastions, instead of industrial silos that until recently populated the area- and which transform into the exterior image of the new building.

The exhibition area has been developed into two types of spaces: one neutral and flexible, suitable for exhibition panels, interactive modules or cabinets with original pieces, and another one defined by the three cylinders, singular spaces, by their shape and size suitable for audiovisual projections. The largest of these is a great “black box”  of 500 m2 and 10m clear height, that will house museographic instalations made with the use of new media and technologies.

The towers that emerge from the garden are dressed in weathering steel mesh, incorporating artificial lighting to iluminate the new park at night. The new museum will provide a unique experience, a walk through a landscape of plants and metal; through a light field glowing at night. This museum will be able to evoke the image of meadows and caves, walls and towers … a true metaphor of a landscape and culture that the inhabitants of Lugo carry in their memories.
