Piranesi Award Prix de Rome 2011 “Planning Archaeology – Designing Archaeology” was granted last Thursday 1 September in Rome to Madinat al Zahra Museum Cordoba, work Architects Sobejano Nieto.

The Jury chaired by Luca Basso Peressut included Lucio Altarelli, Francesco Dal Co, Romulus Martemucci, Amedeo Schiattarella, Luigi Spinelli, Pier Angelo Torricelli y Federico Caliari. The project was selected from 17 Finalists for works carried out in Italy, French, Germany, Egypt, China and Spain.

La Adrianea Academy of Architecture and Archeology, en colaboración with the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, Pantheon in Rome Institute, and Department of Cultural Affairs and Communication of the Ayuntamiento de Roma, Department of Cultural Affairs and the Ayuntamiento de Tivoli, the Order of Architects of Rome and Province, Piranesi Award established in order to highlight the most innovative architectural projects on contemporary interventions made in the archaeological, and the nature of projective research regarding the physical relationship between archeology and landscape.

Architects Sobejano Nieto, Fuensanta founded by Nieto and Enrique Sobejano received, inter alia, the Aga Khan Award (2010), Nike award of the BDA (Germany,2010) and the National Restoration Award from the Ministry of Culture (2008). The study, sites in Madrid and Berlin, recently completed the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian and the Museum of the History of Lugo. Currently under construction is the expansion of the Joanneum museum in Graz (Austria) and Center for Contemporary Creation in Cordoba.

Edificio excelente, a pesar de las goteras. La clausura de la parte más expresiva del yacimiento arqueológico, por obras de restauración, no se compensa ni con el museo ni con en resto de las ruinas, por lo que me he sentido defraudado con la visita. Todo el complicado sistema de acceso al yacimiento, injustificable en un domingo de enero con mínima afluencia de público, no ha hecho más que aumentar mi irritación, así como mi pérdida de tiempo, que no se habría producido de conocer esta circunstancia, ya que hubiera postpuesto mi visita a Medina Azhara (puetos a conseguir la pureza lingüistica podrían conservar el nombre en árabe, para mayor confusión) Ahora dudo que vuelva a visitarlo y menos recomendar su visita
